Andrew Dykstra

My name is Andrew Dykstra and I'm currently a 4th year at Northeastern University pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science (May 2025 expected graduation). I'm from San Diego, California and I've always had a passion for programming ever since I recreated the game space invaders in 6th grade. Since then, I've developed a large variety of projects to continously grow my skill set in new technologies and programming languages. I approach each project by carefully planning and strategizing the most effective solution. By breaking down complex problems into manageable tasks, I create streamlined and efficient solutions that meet the project's needs.

Work Experience + Certification

• CarGurus – Site Reliability Engineer Co - op (January 2024 – June 2024)

- Migrated site from unicorn deployment in AWS to a containerized service architecture in Kubernetes, resulting in over $100,000 of annual savings.

- Reduced deploy and rollback time by 55%.

- Improved SLO coverage from 12% to 88% using Honeycomb and Pyrra.

- Conducted distributed load tests with Locust on new site homepage to ensure resiliency.

- Developed Python microservice to sync services between Showroom and FireHydrant, deployed in Kubernetes.

- Assisted with incident mitigation and wrote postmortems as part of a shadow on-call rotation.

• CarGurus – Site Reliability Engineer Co - op (January 2023 – June 2023)

- Identified root causes of incidents using Honeycomb, Grafana, and Graylog to analyze traces, metrics, and logs.

- Engineered autonomous incident reporter via FireHydrant API, tracking critical metrics such as MTTM and MTTI.

- Developed chef cookbooks that reduced EC2 deployed script machines’ memory usage by 99.8%.

- Automated Kubernetes API key and credential management using AWS Secrets Manager and Terraform Vault.

- Developed Grafana dashboards and integrated alert thresholds with Opsgenie for new services.
